Equine Business Branding Photography and Video at Big Vine Ranch

One of my favorite parts of working with an equestrian business more than once is watching their image library grow right alongside their business. I recently returned to Big Vine Ranch in Patterson, Georgia for another full day of equine branding photography and video featuring their Knabstrupper stallion, Pax Asgard af Pegasus, his offspring, and several of the ranch's broodmares.

I've worked with Heidi and the Big Vine Ranch family on multiple shoots now, so we've developed a great rhythm when it comes to creating content. Heidi comes to the table with ideas for what she needs for the ranch's website, social media, and advertising, and together we figure out how to bring those ideas to life in both photography and video.

This time, we had a lot on our list.

Creating New Photography for the Big Vine Ranch Brand

A big part of the day was devoted to creating updated professional horse photography that Big Vine Ranch can use throughout its marketing.

We photographed black background studio portraits of Pax, his offspring Jumanji and Safari, and several of the ranch's broodmares. Along with traditional portraits, we created detail images that highlight some of the individual features and personalities of the horses.

Some of those images will become artwork for Heidi's home and barn, while others become part of the ranch's growing library of professional marketing content.

We also created updated equine conformation photography for many of the horses. These images serve a very specific purpose for a breeding program because prospective breeders and buyers need to be able to clearly see the individual horse's structure. Big Vine Ranch maintains individual profiles for its horses on its website, so keeping those images current is an important part of presenting the program professionally online.

Photographing Knabstrupper Stallion Pax Asgard af Pegasus

Of course, we spent plenty of time with Pax.

Pax Asgard af Pegasus is a 2016 fewspot Knabstrupper stallion and one of the primary faces of the Big Vine Ranch breeding program. According to Big Vine Ranch, Pax is fully approved with the Westfalen Knabstrupper Book and Anglo European Studbook and has become a prolific sire of premium Knabstrupper sport horse offspring in North America.

And he is ridiculously fun to photograph.

In addition to his studio and conformation portraits, we wanted new stallion photography and video that showed Pax in motion. We photographed him working on a lunge line and then turned him loose in the pasture where we could capture more natural movement.

One of my favorite parts of the day was watching Pax gallop through the pasture alongside his son, Jumanji. Jumanji is a 2024 buckskin leopard Knabstrupper by Pax who earned Premium status at his inspection and is already showing the movement and athleticism Big Vine Ranch is working to produce through its breeding program.

Having photographs is important, but movement video gives potential breeders another way to evaluate a stallion and his offspring. They can actually watch the horses move, interact, and behave rather than relying entirely on still images.

Building a Professional Photography and Video Content Library

Video has become a major part of the work Heidi and I create together.

She needed fresh equine video content for the Big Vine Ranch website, advertising, and their quickly growing social media channels. After working together on several shoots, Heidi has seen firsthand what can happen when professional content is actually put to work.

Sometimes just a few great pieces of video content can create a huge jump in reach on Instagram and TikTok.

That is why my equestrian business branding sessions aren't necessarily about creating content for one advertisement or one social media post. The bigger goal is to build a library of professional horse photography and video footage that the business can pull from again and again.

A breeding farm might need a conformation photograph for a website update today, a vertical video for Instagram next week, a stallion image for an advertisement next month, and beautiful footage for a website refresh six months from now.

Having that content already created makes showing up consistently online so much easier.

Professional Content That Actually Gets Used

This is also where I love being able to share what I've learned from creating content for my own businesses.

During these sessions, Heidi and I aren't only talking about what I'm going to photograph. We're talking about how she can use the content afterward and what she can continue creating herself between our professional shoots.

The everyday parts of running an equestrian business can feel ordinary when you're the person living them. Feeding horses, handling foals, grooming, training, breeding decisions, pasture time, vet visits, and all the other things that happen behind the scenes may feel routine to you.

To your ideal audience, they aren't routine at all.

Those moments help people understand who you are, how you care for your horses, and what makes your program different. Professional photography and video give you a strong visual foundation, while consistently sharing the day to day parts of the business helps keep that library growing.

The goal is that when it's time to post something, update the website, announce a foal, promote a stallion, or advertise an available horse, you're not staring at your phone wondering, "What in the world am I going to post?” because the visual side is taken care of already.

A Pretty Pink Ending at Big Vine Ranch

After a full day of photographing horses, we ended with one of those skies you can't exactly put on the shot list.

The evening turned a beautiful soft pink, so we took Pax down near the pond and created a few more whimsical portraits with his reflection in the water.

It was a completely different look from the black background portraits, conformation images, and action photographs we'd created earlier in the day and a pretty perfect way to finish so I grabbed my lighting gear and we got to work.

I always love getting to create with the Big Vine Ranch family. Even better is getting to watch Heidi take the photography and video we've created together, put it to work, and see the program continue to grow.
