Tell Me a Story

One I Will Always Remember

Have you ever listened to the rhythmic chant of an Oral Storyteller?

Sharing folklore, cultural traditions, values, legends, and instruction. Oral storytelling is an ancient way to inform and teach the traditions and history of a culture. Used by people all over the world. The storytelling takes on many forms — poetry, proverbs, rhymes, songs, interpretive dance, and many others. It is actually the oldest form of teaching known to man.

Oral Storytellers are keepers of society’s history.

Moments to reminisce. Sacred. Cherished.

Using oral storytelling is deeply personal. Drawing the listener in to feel the emotions and visualize the story in their own minds. Remembering a moment in time like it just happened.

The horsewoman in this equine image is a fantastic Oral Storyteller. Perhaps one of the first I’ve ever truly had the opportunity to enjoy hearing a story from. The last time I visited Powderhorn Ranch in Douglas, Wyoming, she told, from memory, the poem from The Man From Snowy River — you’ve seen this movie right?

She had us all on the edge of our seats smiling the entire time. If you are a horse lover and have seen this movie you know the epic scene and the emotions this poem evokes.

When I see this photograph, I’m often reminded of the beautiful stories she shares and the tradition of Oral Storytellers she hails from. I remember the cowboy stories she recounts and the long history of ranching in her family.

But I also remember the sheer beauty of this morning. The light in this image doesn’t happen every day, and on the days it does happen, it only lasts for a few fleeting moments.

I see an independent horsewoman. With a passion and love for horses. Riding alone on her trusty steed to collect her thoughts, make plans, and remember why she does what she does. This horse photo highlights her grace. Steadfast spirit. Her willingness to take chances and risks. Her work ethic. Passion to remember what once was. And still is. Horses and ranching are in her blood.

Oral Storytelling is in her soul.

Equestrian portraiture from our Equine Art Collective elicits a similar response as oral storytelling. Although no sound or language is uttered, the viewer is drawn back to family memories, traditions, celebrations, and generational history. To be remembered forever.

Our art collective provides you the opportunity to purchase equestrian-inspired décor for your home or office. Because art should never be an afterthought. Especially when the pieces remind you of tradition, history, and days gone by.
