Dust, Light, and Learning at Cottonwood Ranch in Nevada with Cowgirls with Cameras

Our latest Cowgirls with Cameras Equine Photography Immersive took place at one of the most inspiring locations we’ve had the privilege to visit… Cottonwood Ranch in Wells, Nevada. Tucked away in the remote northeastern corner of the state, Cottonwood is a working horse and cattle ranch that’s been in the Smith family for six generations. It’s rich with family history, stories passed down over time, and the kind of western beauty that makes getting up before sunrise feel easy.

This year’s photography retreat was five days and five nights of shooting, learning, mentoring, and community. From sunrise to sunset, we experienced it all… chilly mornings, warm afternoons, dramatic 360-degree skies, moody clouds, and golden light that was perfect for silhouettes.

We photographed a wide range of scenes designed to inspire and strengthen each photographer’s portfolio. Western lifestyle moments, cowboy and cowgirl portraits, large herds of horses and mules, the pack string in action, and plenty of dust and atmosphere to bring everything to life. The Nevada skies shifted constantly and gave us one of the most beautiful backdrops we’ve ever worked with.

The group of photographers who joined us this year was incredible. Talented, passionate, fun, and supportive. Some came for the education, some for a creative reset, and some simply to be around others who understand the pull of chasing light behind a moving herd of horses.

Each day started with a sunrise shoot, followed by breakfast and classroom time focused on editing, creativity, camera skills, business strategy, and mindset. The goal is always to make learning useful and applicable, so every classroom session was paired with shooting opportunities where participants could immediately put those ideas into practice with guidance from the instructors.

One of the things that makes Cowgirls with Cameras experiences different is the emphasis on community and mentorship. Along with hands-on instruction during the event, attendees receive three personalized mentoring sessions before or after the retreat. It helps them arrive prepared and continue building momentum once they’re back home.

We also make space for the in-between moments. Time to laugh, talk, wander with a camera, and connect. Cottonwood gave us the perfect environment to do all of it… learn, create, eat well, and rest. Most importantly, to be fully immersed in western and equine photography.

If this sounds like your kind of experience, we’ve got good news.

The next Cowgirls with Cameras Cottonwood Ranch Immersive is scheduled for August 13–18, 2026, and we’d love to have you join us. You can find all the details at cowgirlswithcameras.com or reach out with any questions. Spots are limited and tend to fill quickly.
