Rhylie and Blue: A Senior Portrait Session with a Whole Lot of Heart (and a Few Wild Turkeys)
Photographing senior portraits is always special, but getting to do it for someone I’ve worked with (and laughed with) over the years? That’s the good stuff. Rhylie and her blue roan quarter horse, Blue, recently met me for her equine senior photography session here in St. Johns, FL, and this one was full of heart, laughter, and a whole lot of horse girl energy.
If you’ve followed along for a while, you’ve probably seen Rhylie pop up in my work before. She’s modeled for several of my personal equine photography projects and Florida-based workshops, and I’ve had the honor of photographing her with her other horse, Brownie, too. So when it came time for her senior portraits, I was thrilled to help her celebrate this milestone with Blue by her side.
Rhylie brought three looks to her session, each one capturing a different piece of her story:
• Western show-ready – We started off with a western look to honor her love of Western riding and competing in Florida horse shows with Blue. These images were all about confidence, skill, and the deep bond between a rider and her show partner.
• Band tee and jeans – Next up, Rhylie threw on her favorite Flatland Cavalry t-shirt and a pair of worn-in jeans—basically the uniform of horse girls everywhere. Simple, comfortable, and so her.
• The fairytale moment – And finally, the showstopper: a stunning eggplant-colored dress that looked like it walked straight out of a storybook. Set against the ancient oak trees dripping with Spanish moss—and yes, wild turkeys literally running through the background—it was one of those scenes that felt too perfect to be real.
During her horse photography session, we captured everything from candid, relaxed moments to jaw-dropping portraits worthy of a gallery wall. And that’s exactly what Rhylie and her family chose to do with them—they created custom graduation announcements and selected a set of fine art prints to decorate their home and share with family and friends.
These are the moments that make me so proud to do what I do. Helping equestrians like Rhylie celebrate where they are in life and who’s been by their side along the way is what Fast Horse Photography is all about.
