Spring Foal Photography in Florida with Wiley and Clover
Spring might be my favorite time of year to be a horse photographer in Florida, and sessions like this one are exactly why. There’s just nothing better than photographing the babies. Foals figuring out the world one wobbly step at a time.
I recently spent the morning photographing two new foals, Wiley and Clover, during a casual foal photography session in Reddick, Florida. Both are out of the same mare, Oakley, and it was so fun to see their personalities already starting to come through.
Wiley, a colt, was born first and carried by Potato through embryo transfer. He is out of Whodinis Smart Chic (Oakley) and by Shootin For Chics. He is built beautifully and has the sweetest personality. Already leading eagerly and even stood tied for a bit.
Clover, a filly born on St. Patrick’s Day, is by Bet Hesa Boon and also out of Whodinis Smart Chic (Oakley). She is Oakley’s second foal she has carried, and she brings a wild, spunky energy that made her an absolute joy to photograph. She is going to make someone an amazing little horse one day.
We kept this equine photography session simple and natural, just like it should be. Just babies being babies and experiencing the world for the first time. It’s fun to think about how everything is new to them. The foals spent time outside with their mothers, moving through the pasture, staying close, and occasionally testing their independence by checking in with each other. One of my favorite moments was watching them both settle in for a late morning nap in the grass. Those quiet, peaceful images always end up being some of my favorites.
Foal sessions like this are less about structure and more about patience. Letting them explore, letting them rest, and being ready when those small, genuine interactions happen between mare and foal. It’s a slower pace, but it’s worth it every time.
If you’re welcoming a new foal this season and want to remember these early days, I offer foal photography and equine portrait sessions in St. Augustine, Reddick, and throughout Northeast Florida. These first few months go by fast, and having images of them at this stage is something you’ll always be grateful for.
